According to data from Forbes’ real-time ranking of billionaires, South Africa’s richest people continued to grow their wealth in 2020, despite falling behind their international counterparts.
Nicky Oppenheimer, Johann Rupert, and Patrice Motsepe all saw an increase in their net worth when compared to the same time last year.

Nicky Oppenheimer
He married Orcillia “Strilli” Lasch, the daughter of industrialist Helli Lasch, in 1968; both are Anglican. His father was raised Jewish but later converted to Anglicanism. They have a son named Jonathan Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer Partners was founded by Jonathan Oppenheimer.
Jonathan is a philanthropist and businessman from South Africa. He began his career at NM Rothschild & Sons before moving on to Anglo American and, later, De Beers, where he held several senior management positions in Southern Africa and London for more than two decades.
Jonathan founded Oppenheimer Partners in 2016 with the goal of building a long-term investment group that spans the primary pillars and sectors of key markets.
Johann Rupert
Rupert grew up in Stellenbosch and went to Paul Roos Gymnasium and the University of Stellenbosch, where he studied economics and company law. He dropped out of university to pursue a business career, but the university awarded him an honorary doctorate in Economics in 2004.
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in Commerce in 2008.
Rupert is described as “reclusive” by the Financial Times and Barron’s, and he avoids public appearances and interviews. In 2006, the same newspaper dubbed him “Rupert the Bear” for correctly predicting a global economic crisis.
