Another ‘Fearless’ ANC Leader DIES: RIP
The ANC is having a bad 2022; since the start of the year, the party has lost a slew of senior members. Meanwhile, the party in the province of Eastern Cape released a statement confirming the sad and untimely passing of Noncedo Gqubuthela, a relatively senior member of the party in the Chris Hani Region who doubled as a Councillor at the Chris Hani District Municipality.
She was aged 53.
In its Facebook post, the ANC did not divulge the cause of her death, nor the details pertaining to her memorial service and subsequently her funeral.
However, reports from other sources indicate that she had been suffering from ill-health and she died a couple of days ago.

The ANC waxed lyrical about Gqubuthela’s leadership qualities, describing her as a “formidable and fearless champion of the poor who spent her years in political activism and, as a public representative in government fighting for justice.”

Some of Gqubuthela’s comrades from the Intsika Yethu Sub-region went to the deceased’s family to express their condolences, led by regional secretary Lusanda Sizani.

Her death occurs as the ANC in the province prepares to convene its provincial conference, in which the chairperson, Oscar Mabuyane, and Treasurer, Babalo Madikizela, are odds in to go head to head in a battle that might have ramifications for the ANC’s 55th national elective conference in December.

Ordinarily, funerals are frequently used by ANC leaders as appropriate platforms to lobby for during conference years, therefore it’s almost impossible to entirely rule out the possibility that Gqubuthela’s funeral may be exploited in this way by political figures with vested interests.
