Check who showed up at PMB court shouting and screaming
While former president Jacob Zuma’s corruption court case was in session, something worth sharing took place. Outside the Pietermaritzburg high court on Monday afternoon, Fees Must Fall activist, Bonginkosi Khanyile and another unknown, emerged from nowhere, shouting and pleading for the release of former Pres Zuma from jail. They then started moving around the town preaching their message. Watch video
Security however remains tight at the court. The Pietermaritzburg high court remains heavily suŕrounded as it virtually hears an application by former Zuma who demands Adv Billy Downer not to lead his prosecution. Zuma part of the proceedings live from Estcourt prison.
Khanyile was charged with public violence and failing to comply with a police order during the height of the 2016 nationwide student protests.The Economic Freedom Fighters student leader pleaded guilty to all the charges and stands to face spending three years in prison if he does not pay the fine or is unable to do so.
The former president faces 18 charges and 783 counts related to the case, including fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering. His lawyer,Dali Mpofu is currently arguing that his case be postponed until he can be able to appear in court physically. Mpofu claims that testifying virtually will compromise Zuma’s right to a fair trial.
To all who are screaming that Zuma should be released, ustice minister Ronald Lamola says government will be guided by the constitution and the law, amid calls for former president Jacob Zuma to be released from prison.
